What is ValleyHop?2018-07-27T18:29:11+00:00

ValleyHop is a non-profit manufacturing studio that is supported by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and various grants.   In the process of taking an idea to mass production, ValleyHop is downstream of accelerators, incubators, and labs.  If you have a customer validated prototype and financial backing, ValleyHop is the place you come to learn how to manufacture your first production units.  We are the alternative to contract manufacturing and outsourcing.

Where are you located?2018-07-27T18:29:11+00:00

We are located in Indiana, with facilities in Terre Haute and Indianapolis.  Indiana is the number one state for manufacturing with a vast supply chain of component suppliers, low taxes, a great standard of living for you and your employees, and a highly trained workforce at competitive rates.

What type of manufacturing is supported by ValleyHop?2018-07-27T18:29:11+00:00

Our focus is on technology driven products that require light assembly.  We help companies set up a supply chain for components and then focus on advanced manufacturing techniques for cost effective production.

How long do companies reside at ValleyHop?2018-07-27T18:29:11+00:00

The goal of our team at ValleyHop is to provide founders and investors with a lower risk path to becoming an independent manufacturing company within three years of joining the studio.  We are successful when you generate enough revenue to cover overhead expenses of an independent company.  When you move out of the studio, we help you set up your production equipment in your new location.  We also encourage you to hire the co-ops and interns you have been working with while at the studio and to continue using our local supply chain of component suppliers.

Does ValleyHop invest in companies?2018-07-27T18:29:11+00:00

No.  ValleyHop does not invest or take an equity position in companies that join the studio.  A typical company has secured a private equity partner prior to applying to VallyHop.

Does ValleyHop take ownership of intellectual property, i.e. patents?2018-07-27T18:29:11+00:00

No.  All intellectual property contributed by faculty, staff, and students receiving compensation from ValleyHop is first assigned to ValleyHop through their employment contract and then assigned to the company founders in the tenant agreement.

How can I be a manufacturing partner with ValleyHop?2018-07-27T18:29:11+00:00

Complete the form under the “Contact” section of the website.  A representative from ValleyHop will contact your company.  We are always looking to build our local supply chain to support the manufacturing startups at ValleyHop.  The studio is used for light assembly, so we purchase all components, i.e. metal stampings, die castings, injection moldings, circuit boards, etc.  We are looking for suppliers that will invest time upfront to educate the founders on the manufacturing process, to assist with design for manufacturability, and to practice lean principles.

How do I take a tour of ValleyHop?2018-07-27T18:29:11+00:00

If you are a founder or investor, start by completing the appropriate application, which is located at the bottom of the homepage on the website.  Otherwise, complete the form under the “Contact” section of the website.  A representative from ValleyHop will contact you.

What type of companies does ValleyHop prefer?2018-07-27T18:29:11+00:00

The manufacturing studio is set up for light manufacturing of hardware products.  A typical product is electromechanical and smaller than a microwave oven.  We prefer products that are technology driven, rather than consumer products competing on price.

We are downstream of accelerators and incubators.  A typical company has a customer validated prototype and funding to support the manufacturing phase.  We have positioned ourselves to be a competitive alternative to outsourcing by sharing our resources across multiple manufacturing startups and by charging below market rates based on support from grants.

Will you sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA)?2018-07-27T18:29:11+00:00

We typically do not sign an NDA.  This is handled on a case-by-case basis.

How many applicants will be accepted for each year?2018-07-27T18:29:11+00:00

Our plan is to pilot the manufacturing studio.  The three-year pilot is scheduled to start in 2019.  We plan to accept four companies each year of the pilot.

Will my startup get mentors?2018-07-27T18:29:11+00:00

A staff of full time mentors, i.e. experts in their profession, supports each startup.  For example, we have experts in advanced manufacturing, supply chain, accounting, human resources, etc.  These resources are shared by the startups.  In addition, each startup is assigned student co-ops/interns that are typically dedicated to the startup.  The full time mentors manage the students.  In addition, faculty members flex between companies as needed.  The mission of the studio is education based.  We want to educate the founders to start manufacturing companies.

Will my startup get dedicated manufacturing space?2018-07-27T18:29:11+00:00

As part of the tenant agreement, ValleyHop defines the amount of space dedicated to manufacturing.  This largely depends on the type of product under consideration.  In addition, there is shared office space and common space for rapid prototyping, etc.

Does Rose-Hulman provide software developers and engineers?2018-07-27T18:29:11+00:00

Yes.  Many of the students and faculty working in the manufacturing studio are from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.  However, we also draw upon many universities for students pursuing degrees in accounting, law, supply chain management, human resources, etc.  Manufacturing is a multi-disciplinary activity.

Does ValleyHop provide employees to work on the manufacturing line?2018-07-27T18:27:16+00:00

ValleyHop does not directly employ assembly line workers.  We work with companies to hire their own employees.  For example, we educate founders on best practices in human resources, such as hiring and dismissal, payroll taxes and deductions, health and safety, insurance, etc.  Our focus is on providing the mentoring and resources to educate founders on how to start a manufacturing company.

Do you take equity?2018-07-27T18:29:11+00:00

NO! …That’s correct, you own your company, we are here to make you successful with manufacturing industry 4.0 solutions.

What is Valley Hop looking for in an applicant?2018-07-27T18:29:11+00:00

While we’re open to receiving applications from anyone, our ideal candidate would have a physical prototype and current funding established to support operations.

The network of universities, professors, students, and skilled employees we have on-hand for hardware companies to complete daily operations is unheard of…Traditional accelerators, incubators, or makerspaces can get hardware companies on the right path, but we put them on the map.
